Welcome, Term 1 2011

Posted by SalesianLibrary on February 7, 2011

Hi everyone! Welcome back to school ūüôā I hope you’ve all had a fantastic holiday and are very refreshed and well rested. Did you manage to read any good books while you were away?

As you’ll probably have noticed (if you’ve been into the Library) there have been a few changes in the Library since the end of last year. Firstly we have two new staff members in the Library. Mrs Lewis is our new Librarian, who will be replacing Mrs Stanislawski for the first half of this year and Mrs Sten is our new Library Assistant and has replaced Mrs Ryan. I hope that you’ll come down to the Library to meet them sometime and make them welcome!

You’ll also notice that we’ve changed the layout of the Library! Firstly we’ve straightened up the shelves so they look a lot neater. This has created a dedicated Fiction section on the right hand side of the Library where the class area used to be. The class area has now been moved over near the computers. I think it looks fantastic, it really freshens the Library up! I hope you’ll come down and check it out.

We’ve also got some fantastic new books in while you’ve been on holidays! Mrs Lewis and myself made a trip to Big W the other day and filled a trolley full of books (mostly fiction) that we hope you’ll like. These will be processed this week and hopefully be available for loan by next week. ūüôā

Horror Library Display Pt2

Posted by SalesianLibrary on August 6, 2010

So we’ve been working on our horror display in bits and pieces all week and I think it looks pretty good now. I’ve taken a few more photos this morning for you all to have a look at, but I think you should come down to the Library to check it out in person. We’ve had a student working on her own¬†display table as well, and she’s just finished that. It looks fantastic! Definitely worth having a look at!

This is a picture of the table the student decorated. She’s gone crazy with the spider web but I think it looks really effective. She’s also cut out some little bats to hang, some which are flying around and some which are asleep.

Here’s another picture of the table! I love it!

And here are some pictures of some of the props that have been added to the display. They’ve been kindly donated by some of the staff that work at the school and I think they look really good. Very creepy!

Posted by SalesianLibrary on August 3, 2010

I know how hard it is to get by on a low budget, especially that of a High School Student. But we all still need our entertainment and the cheaper, the better!¬†Which is why I thought I’d share this recent deal that I found, with all of you. Through this website¬†movie buffs can now get Hoyts movie tickets for only $9.95. If you’re going to take advantage of this deal you’ll have to do it quickly, as it ends in just under¬†16 hours. The tickets are valid for up to two months, for any movie session at Hoyts cinemas, except for sessions after 5pm on a Saturday.

Horror Library Display Pt1

Posted by SalesianLibrary on August 3, 2010

We wanted to celebrate book week in the Library, however we thought that the theme ‘Over the Story Bridge’ was a little young for our High School student audience. Which is partly why we went with¬†a¬†horror theme, the other part being that it tied in perfectly with our ‘Zombify it’ competition. So we’ve started decorating the library! You’ll be able to see in the pictures some of the things we’ve done so far (more are to come) and the fact that we’ve probably gone way over the top with the spider webs. lol But I like our book displays that we’ve done, the spider webs, tombs and bats give it that extra bit of spookiness, plus I love our Grim Reaper who is watching over the students and books!

Zombify it! Competition

Posted by SalesianLibrary on July 26, 2010

Ever been reading a book and suddenly¬†thought ”this would be so much better if someone had thought to put zombies into it’? I know I have! Which is partly why I decided to run a competition for the Library titled Zombify it!

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to take a chunk of text from a book you feel can be improved by zombies…and put zombies in there! The text you take from the book should be a maximum of 250 words.

The competition is open to all Salesian Students, and entries can be handed in to the Library Staff, from Monday August 2 to Tuesday August 24. Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges and will be announced at the end of August. We have some great prizes for the winning three entries, including book and movie vouchers!

Remember, you must include the title and author of the piece of work you are zombifying or your entry will not be considered. Please also remember to make sure your full name, home group and year level are on your entry otherwise we will not know who you are!

 Good luck!

Can’t find the book you need in our Library?

Posted by SalesianLibrary on May 10, 2010

I’m sure this has happened to all of us on more than one occasion. You’re really keen to read that new release fiction novel that’s come out, or want to read all you can on that topic that’s interesting at the moment but, alas, your library doesn’t have the book you need! I’ve created this form¬†for when these moments occur. All you have to do is fill out as much as you know about the book you want and we’ll do our best to get a copy for the Library.

Lunch time TV club

Posted by SalesianLibrary on May 6, 2010

The Library has decided to start up a TV club! We’ve decided to give this a try for a few weeks and see how many kids are interested. Mr James and I thought that this would be a good idea for Friday lunchtimes, especially¬†during the cold winter weather which is approaching us at the moment. We at first thought of a movie club, but decided we had too little time to run this, so settled on playing TV episodes. We’re currently playing season 2 of The Big Bang Theory so come on down to the Library this Friday at lunchtime for some great comedy!

Competition Winner

Posted by SalesianLibrary on April 30, 2010

The Library Display competition is now over and the Library staff have drawn the winners. We had some great contributions from quite a few different students so it was very hard to choose just three winners.

We’d like to congratulate Rachel Cateley¬†from MO5¬†who suggested ‘Masquerade¬†Ball’, Louis Parsons from MP5¬†who suggested ‘Medieval Times’ and Islay Pittaway¬†from CN5¬†who suggested ‘History of Flight’. These students have won packs of stationary from Smiggle!

Like I mentioned there were so many different great ideas to choose from. After the success of this competition, we’d definitely like to run more Library competitions in the future. In fact we’re currently planning a bigger competition for June, so keep your eye out for updates!

Changes to the Library

Posted by SalesianLibrary on April 28, 2010

The Library staff have made a few small, but great changes in the Library over the past few weeks that you may or may not have noticed. First up we’ve taken the dreary old bulletin board, which was originally covered in a heshion sack type material and recovered it with this blue material. I think it looks a lot fresher and more colourful:

Next up, we’ve decided to brighten the place up and bring the outside in. That is, we’ve brought a few small pot plants to bring more colour and life into the Library. We have green leafy plants, a couple of flowering plants and one, which is my particular favourite, with pink tinged leaves.

And lastly we’re in the process of tidying our shelves up¬†and making them much more attractive and user friendly. Have a browse through the 700’s and 800’s where you’ll find the shelves are much more open now. We’ve even got enough space to put some books on display in these sections. Here’s a picture of a couple of the shelves:
