Welcome, Term 1 2011

Posted by SalesianLibrary on February 7, 2011

Hi everyone! Welcome back to school 🙂 I hope you’ve all had a fantastic holiday and are very refreshed and well rested. Did you manage to read any good books while you were away?

As you’ll probably have noticed (if you’ve been into the Library) there have been a few changes in the Library since the end of last year. Firstly we have two new staff members in the Library. Mrs Lewis is our new Librarian, who will be replacing Mrs Stanislawski for the first half of this year and Mrs Sten is our new Library Assistant and has replaced Mrs Ryan. I hope that you’ll come down to the Library to meet them sometime and make them welcome!

You’ll also notice that we’ve changed the layout of the Library! Firstly we’ve straightened up the shelves so they look a lot neater. This has created a dedicated Fiction section on the right hand side of the Library where the class area used to be. The class area has now been moved over near the computers. I think it looks fantastic, it really freshens the Library up! I hope you’ll come down and check it out.

We’ve also got some fantastic new books in while you’ve been on holidays! Mrs Lewis and myself made a trip to Big W the other day and filled a trolley full of books (mostly fiction) that we hope you’ll like. These will be processed this week and hopefully be available for loan by next week. 🙂

Can’t find the book you need in our Library?

Posted by SalesianLibrary on May 10, 2010

I’m sure this has happened to all of us on more than one occasion. You’re really keen to read that new release fiction novel that’s come out, or want to read all you can on that topic that’s interesting at the moment but, alas, your library doesn’t have the book you need! I’ve created this form for when these moments occur. All you have to do is fill out as much as you know about the book you want and we’ll do our best to get a copy for the Library.

How Stuff Works

Posted by SalesianLibrary on May 5, 2010

How Stuff Works would have to be one of my favourite websites. It’s a fantastic resource which offers information on so many different topics from history to science to animals to entertainment and so on.

My absolute favourite parts about this site are the blogs that some of the staff writers write. Plus twice a week they also run podcasts about some of the topics they’ve written about, which are very interesting and very witty, especially the Stuff You Should Know ones. Each podcast is created by two staff writers and include titles such as Stuff You Should Know (my favourite), Stuff Mom never told you, Stuff you missed in history class, Stuff from the science lab and more. You can find these podcasts on the website or download them for free from iTunes.

Virtual Tour of the Sistine Chapel

Posted by SalesianLibrary on April 29, 2010

The Vatican has a new website out that allows you to view the interior of the Sistine Chapel. The site has 360 degree views of the Chapel including the floor and ceiling. This is a great resource for students studying history, art or who are just interested in ‘travelling’ from their own computer.

All you have to do is click with your mouse and rotate to whichever part you want to see.

Thanks to Bright Ideas for another great website recommendation!

Avatarred Celebs

Posted by SalesianLibrary on March 25, 2010

Another post purely for your amusement. Ninemsn has made up a slideshow here of celebrities that have been ‘avatarred’, including Robert Pattinson and Britney Spears. My favourites, though, would have to be Hugh Laurie

and Megan Fox still manages to look stunning

And of course I had to include this one of Rowan Atkinson, just because it made me laugh!

Thanks to Skerricks too for making me aware of this 🙂

You can also Avatar yourself with this photo editing website called Avatar Photo. You just select the effect you want, then upload a photo and the website does all the work for you. It’s very funny to see yourself ‘avatarred’, believe me I’ve tried!
