Welcome back, 2009
Welcome everyone to the 2009 school year. I hope your holidays were fun but restful. The Library has a few exciting things planned for the year. In fact, February is ‘Love your Library’ month so our wonderful Librarian Mrs Stanislawski has made up a display. Come into the library and check it out when you can.
Did anyone see the Twilight movie over the holidays? What did you think? As good as the book?
Another film that was based on a book, that I saw, was The Tale of Despereux which I thought was very cute. We’ve actually got the book here in the library, if you’ve seen the movie and want to give it a go, or even if you haven’t seen the movie.
There are quite a few books been made into movies this year so keep an eye out for them. These include:
- The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
- The Secret Life of Bees
- He’s just not that into you
- Where the Wild Things Are
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
So you might want to check out the books before you go see the movies! I know from past experience the book is almost always better than the movie, so it’ll probably be worth it.

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween everyone! I know we don’t really celebrate it here but I’ve made up a little display of books in the library anyway. On the front desk you’ll find some non-fiction books on UFO’s, ghosts, the supernatural and more and then over near the front door I’ve filled our book stand with lots of scary and dark fiction. As you can see I’ve also changed the design of the blog to a Halloween theme.
Is anyone going trick or treating? Or doing anything for Halloween? Enjoy this picture! It looks pretty freaky with the new design!

Spring display
Spring has finally arrived! Hopefully the warmer weather will follow shortly
As you know with a new month comes a new library display. This month Mrs Ryan has collected a lot of student work and put that on display. It looks really good, especially the fascinators made by the textiles class! They’ll be great for the spring carnival coming up soon. There are some photos of these being made here or the original drawings here
And as usual here are some pics of the display that I’ve taken:

The library has also just got some new fiction in, which you can borrow. I’ve listed them here, and you can get more information by clicking on the title:

Olympics
The countdown for the Olympics is pretty much over. Tonight is the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics! To celebrate that and the upcoming book week (the theme is Fuel your Mind) I’ve been put in charge of doing an Olympic themed display for the Library. There’s olympic rings, lots of different flags, heaps of books on the Olympics, a running medal tally and much more. I’m also going to have the Olympics showing on the TV in the Library classroom everyday at lunchtime.
During book week, which runs from the 18th to the 22nd of August, there’s a few exciting things happening in the library! We’ll have:
- a daily quiz for each homegroup – small prizes will be awarded
- a visit from the author James Moloney to the year 7 English classes
- a movie running during lunchtimes in the library classroom
- the olympics running in the main area of the library
Here’s some pictures, or to see it better why not come down to the library to check it out!?
For the latest updates on the games The Official Site of the 2008 Australian Olympic Team or The Beijing Olympics Site are both great websites.
GO AUSTRALIA!

May Display & Reviews
If you haven’t been into the Library lately, be sure to come in and have a look at our display for May. Mrs Ryan has done a great display on Snow and winter, as we come up to the cold months!
Also I would love to get some book recommendations and reviews from you! If there’s been a book that you’ve loved or even hated then please comment or email me (cpeucker@scr.vic.edu.au) or even drop into the library, with your review. It doesn’t have to be very long, just a short paragraph…although do feel free to write as much as you like. Reviews will be posted on this blog, and might even be put up in the Library!
Here’s some sentences to get you started…..
This book is about……
The best thing about this book is……
I didn’t like the way……
You might like this book if you also enjoyed……
If this book had a soundtrack, it would be…….

Anzac Day
Anzac Day is one of the most important days in the Australian calendar as the country pauses to remember those that have served, fallen and those that were left behind.
Don’t forget to have a look at our ‘Australia at war in the Pacific’ display (see the picture in my last entry). It will be up in the Library until Thursday 24th of April.
The library also has plenty of books about Anzac Day. You can read up on Anzac Day in the non-fiction section at 940.40994 or one of the many fiction books, including ‘A Rose for the ANZAC Boys‘ by Jackie French.
A Rose for the ANZAC Boys by Jackie French: (FRE)
It is 1915. War is being fought on a horrific scale in the trenches of France, but it might as well be a world away from sixteen-year-old Midge Macpherson, at school in England learning to be a young lady. But the war is coming closer: Midge’s brothers are in the army, and her twin, Tim, is listed as ‘missing’ in the devastating defeat of the Anzac forces at Gallipoli.
Desperate to do their bit – and avoid the boredom of school and the restriction of Society – Midge and her friends Ethel and Anne start a canteen in France, caring for the endless flow of wounded soldiers returning from the front. Midge, recruited by the over-stretched ambulance service, is thrust into carnage and scenes of courage she could never have imagined. And when the war is over, all three girls – and their Anzac boys as well – discover that even going ‘home’ can be both strange and wonderful.

Displays in the Library
Mr James has put together a fantastic display in the Library for April. The theme is ‘Australia at War in the Pacific’ and the display includes original artifacts, books, posters and a DVD.
The other display boards have a mulitcultural theme with one decorated with posters on the recent visit from the Japanese students and the other containing some fun facts and pictures on China, including Chinese Zodiac.
